What is Body Fat Percentage ( BFP ) ?
The body fat percentage (BFP) of a human or other living being is the total mass of fat divided
by total body mass, multiplied by 100; body fat includes essential body fat and storage body
fat. Essential body fat is necessary to maintain life and reproductive functions. The percentage
of essential body fat for women is greater than that for men, due to the demands of childbearing
and other hormonal functions. Storage body fat consists of fat accumulation in adipose tissue,
part of which protects internal organs in the chest and abdomen. A number of methods are
available for determining body fat percentage, such as measurement with calipers or through the
use of bioelectrical impedance analysis.
How to Calculate BFP?
There are various methods for calculating body fat percentage, such as underwater weighing
method, human average density measurement method, ultrasound method, and so on. In general,
in order to easily estimate the body fat percentage,
BMI estimation can be used, or parameters such as neck circumference, waist circumference,
and hip circumference can be used as a reference for the body fat percentage.
1. Calculate body fat percentage using BMI :
adult males : BFP = 1.20 × BMI + 0.23 × Age - 16.2
adult females : BFP = 1.20 × BMI + 0.23 × Age - 5.4
boys : BFP = 1.51 × BMI - 0.70 × Age - 2.2
girls : BFP = 1.51 × BMI - 0.70 × Age + 1.4
Note : Adults are 18 years or older.
2. Calculate body fat percentage using parameters such as waist circumference :
males : BFP = [ 495 / ( 1.0324 - 0.19077×log10(Waist-Neck) + 0.15456×log10(Height) ) ]
- 450
females : BFP = [ 495 / ( 1.29579 - 0.35004×log10(Waist+Hip-Neck) +
0.22100×log10(Height)
) ] - 450
